A new global phylogeny of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scleractinia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stony corals (Scleractinia)<\/a> shows their ancestor (ca. 460 Ma) was non-symbiotic (heterotrophic). The later rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mutualism_(biology)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mutualism<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zooxanthellae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autotrophic organisms<\/a> (ca. 300 Ma) spurred diversification but heightened environmental vulnerability. Many extant heterotrophic genera (e.g., <em>Caryophyllia<\/em>, <em>Madrepora<\/em>) arose in the Mesozoic, whereas photosymbiotic corals appeared in the Triassic (~240 Ma) and have repeatedly suffered environmental crises.
