Fish inner ear <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otolith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">otoliths<\/a> consist of calcium carbonate (CaCO<sub>3<\/sub>) in various polymorphic forms (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vaterite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vaterite<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aragonite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aragonite<\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proteins<\/a> are known to be involved in controlling polymorphic forms, with a new study suggesting a mechanism involving <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phosphorylation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phosphorylation<\/a> of a protein responsible of biomineralisation.
