Omfalozaury znane by\u0142y do tej pory z fragmentarycznych skamienia\u0142o\u015bci z wczesnego i \u015brodkowego <a href=\"https:\/\/pl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">triasu<\/a>, g\u0142\u00f3wnie fragment\u00f3w szcz\u0119k z charakterystycznym uz\u0119bieniem, kt\u00f3re s\u0142u\u017cy\u0142o najpewniej do kruszenia muszli i pancerzy morskich bezkr\u0119gowc\u00f3w. Jednak paleontolodzy nie byli w stanie dok\u0142adnie okre\u015bli\u0107, z kt\u00f3r\u0105 grup\u0105 <a href=\"https:\/\/pl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gady\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gad\u00f3w<\/a> omfalozaury by\u0142y najbli\u017cej spokrewnione. Nowy okaz gada morskiego z rodzaju <i>Sclerocormus<\/i> z wczesnego triasu po\u0142udniowych Chin \u015bwiadczy o jego przynale\u017cno\u015bci do omfalozaur\u00f3w oraz udowadnia, \u017ce gady te by\u0142y najbli\u017cszymi krewnymi <a href=\"https:\/\/pl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ichtiozaury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ichtiozaur\u00f3w<\/a> \u2013 s\u0142ynnych rybokszta\u0142tnych gad\u00f3w morskich.
